Chip Comparison - Man v Nature
How do our silicon chips compare with Nature's processing?
The Margolus-Levitin value for the natural processing rate in matter is 5 x 1050 logic operations per second per kilogram, and the silicon in a typical chip weighs about 2 x 10-3 kg (2 gm), so the natural processing in the silicon is about 1048 ops/sec. This compares with about 1012 ops/sec that the chip can do as information processing that's useful for humans. So Nature squeezes about 1036 times more processing out of the silicon chip than we can. We are just scratching the surface.
